Do you need to be a maths genius to code?
▶ Watch on YouTube
What happens
Byte, who calls himself a maths genius, races Max. Byte sets speed and angle, but forgets the step to turn, and crashes into the tyres. Meanwhile Bugsy secretly swaps two of Max's steps, so his car turns too early. Max reads his code, finds the wrong order and puts it back: forward, turn_left, forward. Now his car takes the corner and wins.
Talk about it
- Byte says he's a maths genius. Why did his car still crash?
- What did Bugsy change in Max's code, and how did Max find it?
- Think of something you do in steps every day (brushing teeth, making a sandwich). What happens if you swap two steps?
Try it at home or in class (5 minutes, no screen)
- One of you is the robot, one is the coder.
- The coder gives steps: forward, turn left, turn right.
- The robot does exactly what it hears. Nothing more.
- Now swap two steps. Where does the robot end up?
What they say
Byte: Easy! I'm a maths genius!
Max: But I'm bad at maths...
Byte: Wait... where's the turn?!
Bugsy: Hee hee hee... while they chat... I'll swap Max's steps!
Max: Why is it turning?!
Max: Turn left... before forward? Wrong order!
Pixel: Myth or fact: you need to be a maths genius to code?
Pixel: Myth! Coding is like a language: clear steps, in the right order.
Byte: So I just tell it what to do... step by step!
Bugsy: Your turn...
